Distressed denim

Distressed denim is jeans deliberately given a worn-in look through fading, whiskering, abrasion, holes, or frayed hems. The damage is added during finishing to mimic years of natural wear, ranging from light fading to heavily ripped styles.

Brands create distressing with sanding, lasers, enzyme washes, and hand-finishing to place fades and rips where they'd naturally form. The level ranges from subtle whiskering at the hip to large blown-out knees.

It's effectively the opposite approach to raw denim, where the wearer earns the fades over time instead of the factory adding them up front.
