Drop waist

A drop waist places the garment's waist seam at the hip rather than the natural waistline, so the bodice is elongated and any gathering or pleating begins lower down. It creates a relaxed, vintage-leaning shape seen in dresses and skirts.

By moving the waistline down to the hip, a drop waist de-emphasises the natural waist and gives a long, straight line through the torso — the signature look of 1920s flapper dresses, now recurring in modern collections.

It's the inverse of an empire waist: where empire raises the seam under the bust, a drop waist lowers it past the natural waist.
