Houndstooth

Houndstooth is a two-tone textile pattern of broken, jagged checks that resemble abstract four-pointed shapes or a dog's tooth, most often in black and white. Woven rather than printed, it's a timeless, slightly formal motif seen on tailored coats, blazers, skirts, and accessories, and reads as classic and refined.

The pattern comes from a specific twill weave of alternating colored yarns, which is why it's traditionally found in wool tailoring. Scaled-up versions are bold and graphic; tiny ones (puppytooth) read almost solid from a distance.

It belongs to the same heritage-weave family as herringbone and tweed, and suits old money and dark academia tailoring.
