Necklines & Collars

Off-the-shoulder

An off-the-shoulder neckline sits below the shoulders, baring them and the collarbone while the garment is held up across the upper arms or by a band around the bust. It's an elegant, slightly romantic look on tops and dresses.

By exposing the shoulders and collarbone, the style draws attention upward and reads as feminine and summery. Some versions have sleeves that begin on the upper arm; others use an elasticated band to stay up.

It's a lower, more revealing relative of the boat neck — same horizontal emphasis, but dropped below the shoulders.
