Peplum

A peplum is a short, flared ruffle attached at the waist of a top, jacket, or dress, flaring out over the hips. It adds volume and definition at the waistline, creating an hourglass effect over whatever you wear beneath.

By cinching at the narrowest part of the waist and then flaring, a peplum exaggerates the waist-to-hip contrast — which is why it reads as flattering on many shapes. The flare also skims the hips rather than clinging to them.

Peplum tops pair best with slim or straight bottoms, since the volume at the hip needs a clean line below to balance it.
