Ribbing

Ribbing is a knit structure of alternating raised and recessed vertical columns that gives fabric strong horizontal stretch and recovery. Used at cuffs, hems, collars, and waistbands — and sometimes across whole garments — it hugs the body, springs back into shape, and keeps openings snug, as on a bomber jacket's cuffs and hem.

Ribs are described by their stitch ratio (1x1, 2x2), with wider ribs giving a bolder texture. The stretch-and-recovery is what stops cuffs and waistbands from stretching out and sagging.

Ribbing is what gives a bomber jacket and many sweaters their snug, elasticated edges, and a fitted ribbed knit makes a body-skimming top.
