Denim & Jeans

Denim weight (oz)

Denim weight is how much a yard of the fabric weighs in ounces (oz), signalling how heavy and stiff the denim is. Lightweight denim (under ~12 oz) is soft and summery, midweight (12–16 oz) is the everyday standard, and heavyweight (16 oz+) is stiff and rugged.

Heavier denim is more durable, holds its shape, and breaks in with sharper fades, but it's stiff at first and warm to wear. Lighter denim is softer and more comfortable straight away, which is why it's used for summer jeans and jackets.

Weight is the denim equivalent of GSM for other fabrics — a quick read on how substantial the cloth will feel before you ever try it on.
