Tartan

Tartan is a specific kind of plaid built from crossing bands of multiple colors arranged in a precise, repeating sequence (a sett), historically tied to Scottish clans and regions. The vertical and horizontal patterns match, creating a symmetrical grid. All tartan is plaid, but not every plaid is a true tartan.

The defining trait is the structured, named sett — a fixed order of stripe colors and widths that repeats identically in both directions. Classic examples include Black Watch and Royal Stewart.

Tartan is the more formal, codified relative of generic plaid, and a recurring motif in preppy, punk, and dark academia styling.
