Trouser break

A trouser break is the small fold of fabric that forms where the trouser hem rests on the shoe. It's set by the trouser length: no break means the hem just clears the shoe, while a full break creates a noticeable crease. Most modern tailoring favors no break or a slight break.

From shortest to longest: no break (hem floats above the shoe), slight or quarter break (a single small fold), and full break (the fabric stacks on the shoe). Shorter breaks look modern and slim; fuller breaks read more traditional.

Break is purely a length decision, which is why inseam matters so much — having trousers hemmed to the right length is how you get the break you want.
