Flannel

Flannel is a soft, loosely woven fabric — typically cotton or wool — that's brushed on one or both sides to raise a slightly fuzzy, napped surface. The brushing traps air, making it warm and cozy. Best known as the fabric of plaid winter shirts, it's also used in wool suiting, pajamas, and bedding.

Cotton flannel is the soft, brushed shirting of casual fall and winter wardrobes, while wool flannel is a smooth, warm suiting cloth. The defining trait is the brushed nap, not a particular pattern.

Flannel shirts are the natural base for a shacket layer and frequently come in plaid and tartan.
