Tailoring & Construction

Lining

Lining is the inner layer of fabric sewn inside a garment to finish the interior. It helps the piece slip on and off smoothly, holds the shape, conceals seams and construction, adds warmth or opacity, and protects the outer fabric. Linings are common in jackets, coats, skirts, dresses, and tailored trousers.

Jackets may be fully lined, half-lined, or unlined — fuller linings add structure and warmth, while less lining feels lighter and more breathable. Skirts and sheer fabrics use lining mainly for opacity and to stop clinging.

Lining works alongside the canvas inside tailored jackets; together they determine how structured and durable a garment feels.
