Necklines & Collars

Turtleneck

A turtleneck is a high, close-fitting collar that covers most of the neck and folds over on itself. Warmer and taller than a mock neck, it's a cold-weather staple on knits and fine-gauge layering tops.

The defining feature is the fold: the collar is tall enough to double over, covering the neck fully for warmth. A fine-gauge turtleneck layers neatly under shirts and knits, while a chunky one stands alone.

Drop the height so it can't fold and you have a mock neck; loosen and drape it and you're closer to a cowl.
